A simple success of SEAKM for the Wichita Chapter:
-
Prior to SEAKM formation two of the local structural engineers volunteered for the City of Wichita committee on the review of the IBC 2000 building code. The committee was composed of architects, contractors, building officials and the structural engineers.
-
SEAKM was formed during the building code review and each of these engineers joined. SEAKM had at that time representation on this committee.
-
After adoption of the IBC 2000, SEAKM in one of the monthly meetings (February 21, 2002) invited local architects to discuss the provisions for special structural inspections. We believe that after this meeting, the architects had a better understanding on the requirements and the necessity of getting these inspections done.
-
In the meeting of May 15, 2002 SEAKM invited the City of Wichita Central Inspection department to a meeting to have a discussion on special structural inspection. They left with a better appreciation of the requirements and responsibilities of this provision.
-
November of 2002, the City of Wichita Central Inspection invites SEAKM to lead the committee to begin the process of Special Structural Inspections in Wichita.
-
In the meeting of November 20, 2002 SEAKM had a lawyer as a presenter. One of the hot topics was special structural inspection and the liability for not insisting that the code provisions be followed. It also came out that the State of South Dakota was now taking action on individual’s licenses for failing to follow the code provisions on making sure the inspections take place.
-
December 16, 2002 the first meeting on the implementation of special structural inspections is held. On the committee are three members of SEAKM, three contractors, two architects, one specification institute member, four central inspection members, and a representative of building owners. Discussions on not whether the inspections are to be done, but how to implement the special structural inspections are discussed.
- Further meetings are planned monthly until the program is fully implemented by the city of Wichita.
